T-800 Base Repaint Suggestions?

The end is near! My T-800 is assembled, and I'm waiting on pack 12 to assemble the base. But I want to repaint it. The dark gray/lightgray wash doesn't do it for me. 

I will probably fill the cracks, blend the whole thing and then repaint...but before I commit, has anyone here tried that? How were your results?

I'd suggest you have a look at YouTuber 'Gross Models'. He does a fill and then repaints the base as well. Not for me, but looks like what you may be interested in.

I love how he sealed the seams before his repaint. Very good job. I decided to just leave the seams, but go pretty grimy with my bones.
