Pack 8 & Extra details

Recommended Posts

I'm not as talented as many on this forum, and I had resigned myself to complete this build as is, but over the last few weeks between the long delays, I have been buying little items to help. I bought .5 mm square and loop wire, in brass and silver and a number of specialty jewelry making pliers and tools to help.

I wanted to add a bit of chrome trim around the shifter boot, it may not be a true factory option, but most cars from the 60's had a ring or square flange that held the boot to the floor and I wanted to make one. Once I had it bent and sized I glued it to my after-market shifter boot, which is the proper size to fill the hole in the floor (thanks Joaquin) and it came out nice.

I then decided I'd try to bend a piece of leftover brass rod I had from another project to upgrade the details under the hood. It's not stellar, but it came out ok. I hadn't considered clearance issues before I started, but once I committed, I went all in. The skills I had as a kid and avid modeler are coming back, but the eyesight and patience aren't as easily regained. I made some twisted wires to see how easy it was and I may upgrade some other things, I am still always impressed and astounded by the commitment to detail many here display, (Jo,mora and Oliv79, and others). I was also using some of the new tools to practice making hose clamps and such, the metal bends easily, holds its shape and looks great.

I also noticed the firewall and Right side engine bay do not sit flush when you screw them together, so you may need to glue them once you fit them together (hence the tape holding them).

Pack 8 is shaping up to be a fantastic assembly process. We move from "pieces" to assemblies. Mounting the firewall to the chassis and then the engine to the chassis really brings it together. Next step is mounting the interior to the chassis, but I want to hold off until I finish a few extra details.

Following the advice, I tried using "plumber's tape" (which is a thin metallic tape used to seal ducting and heater plumes in the US, it's also similar to bare metal foil, though much cheaper if not a bit harder to work with) to make hose clamps. I also used a few of the Mike Lane Mods hose clamps, (which are amazing) and finally, a Molotow (sp?) Chrome Marker/pen. The results all worked well. Using the 1/8 scale hose clamps is tougher for my eyes, I had to cut one to make a few very small hose clamps. and I used a single one to clamp the cold air intake, just to see how it looked.

The details have been installed and assembled, Pack 8 was enjoyable, bringing the vehicle into a more recognizable state.

I will add, I had great difficulty getting the interior to align and settle onto the chassis, I aligned the wires, repeating the process multiple times and still couldn't ge the interior to lay flat and the instructions are a bit vague as to how flat it's supposed to be. Finally, I had to flex the chassis "opening" the space and was able to set the interior as deep into the chassis as I was able.

The seatbelts came out great, all of the reference photos of original buckles showed what looked like a logo on them, but couldn't find a clear picture, so I approximated it as best as I could. Thanks J for the belt hardware, it's spectacular!

I hope all of you enjoyed this Pack as much as I did, and will be adding even more details to yours.
