Monaco, 22 May 1955. Print from Fred Pearse photo collection. Car 2 is J M Fangio, who finished first; Car 6 is S Moss, who finished third. As far as I know these cars were slightly different [engine location] and were the special short wheel base open  cigar shape bodies intended to give better agility on the tight circurt. First appearance of the W 196 in this form. As the chassis was shorter than in the previous streamliner version, the front brakes had to be moved outside the chassis, they were of necessity smaller that the earlier inboard drums, andprobably  not as effective.
