Mercedes-Benz 300SL W198 with conversion to the “Blue Mauritius”

I'll just carry on and hope that it interests one or the other.

The nice thing about not building according to the instructions is that you can work on the parts or do what you want.

Today I was once again busy with the Rudge central locks.

Unfortunately there is nothing in the accessories market and since I don't have a 3D printer, I have to do it by hand again.

So first I got the measurements and pictures and converted them to a scale of 1:8.

Then I thought to myself, if you're going to use central locks, you should screw them on.

I chose a threaded disk for the wheel nut and a threaded sleeve for the rim.

In order to be able to glue everything together and to get the right diameter, I cut off a piece of 12.9 mm plastic pipe and glued it around the nut.

According to my specifications, this is about 1.5 mm too big, but I can live with that.

Now I had to build the middle section and first glued together a filling for the "dome" from leftovers.

Now I was able to use an old headlight from the grab box, shortened it and drilled a hole in the upper end.

The MB star and oak leaf front emblem from the Revell 1:12 kit fits perfectly here.

The threaded sleeve will later be glued into the rim and the wheel can be easily screwed on through the hole.

This means that the Rudge lock can be screwed on after the wheels have been assembled.

Now the wings need to be made.

glued at an angle of around 15°, you can already see the Rudge central locking mechanism quite clearly.

I have already sanded the right wing down to the right thickness.

A bit more filling and fine-tuning and then my original model will be ready.

I want to have this cast in metal and hope that the costs are not too high.

Otherwise I will make it with resin and paint it chrome.

Perhaps someone is interested in the central screws and would like to upgrade their model accordingly.

If I have more made, the price per set will definitely be cheaper for everyone.

As soon as I have the price for the metal casting, I will be happy to announce it here.

This is done using the lost wax casting process.

since I didn't have any templates for the carpets as patterns, I just made simple rectangles behind the seats.

When I was researching images, I came across a picture and enlarged a section.

So I made the carpets again... Paper pattern.

Transferred to the fabric

looks pretty good so far

I approached the painting step by step and now had to find the right color.

The plaque on the front wall says Nitrolack DB 374 and both the owner and all the information on the internet only ever mention Bavarian blue as the color. According to the database at www.300SL.org, only one Gullwing model called DB 374 Blue was delivered in 1955, so it must be our Bavarian Blue. The name Bavarian blue first appeared in 1970, a good 15 years later, under the color code DB 5374 in the Mercedes Benz truck segment and is unfortunately no longer used today. After a long search, I came across a supplier who has a base coat in BA 5374 Bavarian blue in their range.

When I saw the first spray result I was very surprised, I had absolutely not imagined it would be so dark.

But depending on the light in which you look at the color sample, it looks different.

 

I sent the owner my color sample and he confirmed the color for me.

The paint has now been found and all parts that need to be repainted have been collected.

And guys, what can I say, these are of such good quality that you'll be speechless.

The parts are bright nickel-plated after etching, giving them a real 3D appearance.

And all of this for just under 35 EUR including shipping, what else can you say about that.

I'll show you the kit stickers and the new etched parts.

So these details will really enhance the model, I'm totally thrilled.

Even the extremely expensive etched parts from others cannot keep up with this quality.

I had contact with Aleksey many years ago and everything has changed for him in the last two years.

Many people avoid Russian people and consider everyone to be bad people.

For me he is a model maker who makes wonderful items.

Unfortunately, payments and deliveries are extremely difficult, we found a way for me via Latvia.

The original has Marchal Fantastic Fog Lights installed.

These have a diameter of 170 mm, which would be 21.25 mm on a scale of 1:8.

What I'm particularly concerned about is this very special diffuser.

Does anyone have any idea how I can make one?

Thank you Kermh. I have to make this statement. I have Russian friends and many other cultures also. I’m a Japanese American and remember some of the bad remarks from some. So as far as the Russian people being bad is a gross bad statement. I was in China several years ago adopting a very beautiful young baby. The people are fantastic. And at that time I realized that it’s our governments that mess things up. The people are great. I’ll drop it now, but people all over the world are fantastic. Yes, do that, he'll be happy, I was in contact with him again today. Since direct payments and deliveries are not possible at the moment, a lot of things are done indirectly and via middlemen. Alex has a friend in Latvia and he has a friend in Germany. That's how I paid and that's how the goods will arrive. I hope that the suffering for everyone will soon be over and that we can trade with Russia regularly again.

Been following this build, and it all looks fantastic!  I built an IXO Volvo Amazon last year and it came with the type of fog lights you might be looking for. Here’s some bad pictures of the lights. They are very close to the size you need.

Mine was a complete kit, but it’s in the very first stage. Their customer service is great!  I hope they can accommodate a request for them.

I didn't look for issue 1, but it's often the case that such parts are included at the beginning.

Yes, unfortunately it's only a full kit, but I hope that issue 1 is available separately.

I received the first pictures from the painter today, the first parts are now painted in DB 5374 Bavarian Blue.

And again the paint looks completely different, the light makes such a difference.

But the parts are beautiful, now I'm even more excited about assembling them.

It's raining outside, it's a bit darker than yesterday when the sun was shining and the same paint looks a lot darker.

But it's beeeaaaautiful.
