Next up is the trunk lid.

To position the emblems and signs correctly, I made a template out of adhesive tape

300SL232.jpg.73b2b0aeb3f052fea179bf8593213383.jpg

and transferred it to the newly painted lid.

300SL233.jpg.79cf943e23cb103f28a4cc7274fde133.jpg

300SL234.jpg.62978fc143dcf079a720abfb4f25a1fb.jpg

A comparison says more than a thousand words.

300SL235.jpg.622fd858b98b1ea08c9173ba7c92d77c.jpg

And with the Ultra Glue from MIG / Ammo, assembly was also relatively easy.

hello,

just a small update today.

Schlssel1.thumb.jpg.12185003966e7a099c74e261ccc25103.jpg

Unfortunately, the model doesn't come with an ignition key, but I found something suitable on an etched circuit board.
The ignition lock was drilled out with a 0.3 mm drill and now everything fits.

hello,

there is a light in the distance... the end is near

I turned to the dashboard again today and looked at the pictures of the original again.

300SL237.jpg.1df4607e5bb966a10d314f1ccf2dc47a.jpg

It's about this narrow lip on top of the dashboard.

In the kit it was cast as one part with the entire body and I sanded it down.

I initially assumed that this small edge would hardly be visible later and simply covered a base body with it.

What can I say, I didn't like it, something was missing and I couldn't leave it alone.

So I made a template of the kit part with adhesive tape, transferred it to 1 mm sheet and cut out the part.

300SL238.jpg.fda3296da0c5754bd0bbb8f09a47e7dd.jpg

300SL239.jpg.d6c3e828654fe44e7fe67a725796a09e.jpg

But I immediately rejected the idea of covering this narrow lip with leather, mixed paint to match the leather again and painted the part.

300SL240.jpg.1c189f7e1d30759641c33695c4ed64b7.jpg

Now I'm happy, the dashboard is finished and could be attached to the interior and tubular frame.

300SL241.jpg.30db91d941c2e0960902770ec7b11641.jpg

300SL242.jpg.9c612e2a87daa2c8d0c7b34c0eda5bfe.jpg

300SL243.jpg.8db98b87b49c47fce96d1d4a6d0ac5fb.jpg

300SL244.jpg.4f8558cbc5d5265aca15b782554c08e8.jpg

And again a comparison to the original.

300SL244a.jpg.8967c6f25b575bc73fbf2c790efc209a.jpg

This means that the frame with engine and chassis is complete, along with the entire interior.

Finally, something that I can definitely call finished.

hello,

now that everything inside is finished, I moved on to the bodywork.

When I looked through my pictures, I noticed that the horns were not installed on the rear bumper.

300SL248.thumb.jpg.906bcd1713541c325e7ebef161cbed9d.jpg

So I had to close the holes in the kit part, fill everything, sand it and re-chrome it.

300SL250.jpg.6e578725b9a6855e1f1e54d6441568fe.jpg

It's interesting that it's real chrome, and when I sanded it, a nice copper layer came out.

300SL251.jpg.71b8cded340b170478d1d361f53d7a24.jpg

The new chrome is on And the rear bumper could be fitted.

hello,

we continue with the installation of the wheel arches and the trunk.

The first thing I got my hands on was the jack and it couldn't stay as it was delivered.

Even if you can't see much of it later when it's installed, I think it looks much more harmonious.

300SL256.jpg.c824fa28b2ca21d984b0615f77550bcf.jpg

Now the fully assembled contents of the trunk.

300SL257.thumb.jpg.4df0fabd5200a9cc34d4ca9684b021d5.jpg

And everything is in its place in the body.

300SL258.jpg.e519777147ad98a7d5da53a73bcc1b20.jpg

300SL259.jpg.471eef1aa66472e0a0e17c39fd5bcb0f.jpg

And another comparison with the original.

300SL260.jpg.0372b1d8633b11cfa3024a6fd649fa87.jpg

Then the wheel arches, also painted blue, were installed.

hello,

now comes the construction phase that was not necessarily the most difficult for me but was definitely the most nerve-wracking, the wedding.

The body had to be spread and pulled here and there, the tubular space frame had to be pressed and pushed, that wasn't pretty, it cracked and creaked, it hung here and there, everything had to get past so many corners and edges before it was finally in place.

I can tell you I was so scared of breaking something during this phase of assembly, I was drenched in sweat and completely exhausted.

300SL262.jpg.83090b729f2d6b16298392c9565567b5.jpg

300SL264.jpg.a15db779f59772834dc7a8d3f3a2e25f.jpg

300SL263.jpg.56e6491940a82791524950e4392b674f.jpg

300SL265.jpg.a30174f6d84a9826e6a47d37b7bd5968.jpg

As everything was already upside down, I installed the wheels and the tank or the battery compartment straight away.

300SL266.jpg.1bc74949b47a42111f7a16d224956fce.jpg

Now the time had come, for the first time I could put the model on its own feet, or rather wheels.

Hello,

It didn't stand on its tires for long, so it was upside down and the side skirts were fitted.

300SL270.jpg.f26d575c64696e294c99dc3b7ebc494e.jpg

And because it was already upside down, I closed the underbody straight away.

300SL271.jpg.2850bdbbcbd11d21cd3e825838bcd756.jpg

300SL272.jpg.f15629547b1da38eb74880faffd85997.jpg

300SL274.jpg.ff236bea632d173d111a9b75b339d6f0.jpg

That should have been it on the underside, now the tires can go back down.

Today I installed the last edition no. 100, the damper pot was refined and could be installed.

First the kit part.

300SL285.jpg.518348027c7263330bca8fc4b7c2f2bb.jpg

The original has a clear raised edge on the sides, so I made this and added a dent on the top, as the original also has this.

300SL286.jpg.9979ebbdc9448d1f3f604c5fde65f040.jpg

Then the original damper pot has a clearly visible company name plaque on the top.

300SL284.thumb.jpg.8647ff4feb4ffc38caa00034f14396c5.jpg

It was simply not possible to reproduce this in this way, but in a simplified form it is acceptable.

300SL283.jpg.5fa97fe47c5cddd8f402038cd66fb5c7.jpg

300SL288.jpg.ef20d888d3174474e4b582ef88ba264b.jpg

The connecting pipe was also reworked.

300SL291.jpg.6247d8c5f05a40f9a2fd6e85ddb6d5ff.jpg

And so everything has found its place in the engine compartment.

300SL290.jpg.a315c28407f871850efdb7269416114b.jpg

300SL289.jpg.4f8c999da57df6e208b17d2f86ccc6a2.jpg

and again a comparison with the original

Hello,

I'll ask the question here:

Does the hood stay open on your models?

It seems there is only this small metal bracket in the bottom corner.

300SL292.jpg.185ecc576dd5165a67326e799de65a70.jpg

But how is this supposed to support the hood?

Is there no support strut on the 300 SL?

How does the hood stay up?

Have I forgotten something?

Or put it together incorrectly?

Mine stays up just fine. Not sure why yours won’t. Looks like you have everything correct.IMG_4680.thumb.jpeg.652f114f4e382cc281120b90aa6d1f0d.jpeg

hello,

one of the most important features of a 300SL are certainly the relatively frequently used Rudge central locks, which many model makers would have liked to see on this model.

As my template had exactly these mounted, I had already made a master model some time ago.

300SL148.jpg.0911b3f23f8b61cc960faa64f932734e.jpg

Now it has finally worked - a precision casting company here in Berlin has duplicated my master model for me.

300SL276.jpg.035a1b5775a86e5f5392c3c6397c03fc.jpg

In the picture you can see my master model, a wax model, the rough casting and the polished fastener.

300SL293.jpg.e337dce4db90dde844cdb7e769aac9d7.jpg

Here are the stages of polishing.

300SL278.jpg.2dcf5a38c45778a99a673be741705f77.jpg

300SL279.jpg.494a3e66adadb44a0be947c67b885cb0.jpg

300SL280.jpg.222e58cc38ca20200476a014ff2e4268.jpg

300SL281.jpg.85d009f9d9983e74bf979bea168bef7e.jpg

And a picture of my polishing line.

300SL279a.jpg.0b3ec67f473f68533b119b45dd87e1eb.jpg

Now the assembly could begin. For this, the wheels had to be removed again and the threaded sleeves could be glued in

300SL294.jpg.636317d9d23dbccff8e106522b8e3551.jpg

and the locking screws can be screwed on.

300SL295.jpg.650edcc471c834a8bf1c5a30e4ba5467.jpg

300SL296.jpg.1fa5282e00f544c3518b0e373f34499b.jpg

The wheels can be attached wonderfully with the kit screw through the hole. I love it when a plan works out.

300SL297.jpg.113c048b9401e41afae55f773e9cde54.jpg

300SL298.jpg.047759746f25cebdba45f9632702420c.jpg

With the Rudge fasteners mounted, it looks completely different.

300SL299.jpg.501f20370e28f7f2b36ea000e8a966a7.jpg

300SL300.thumb.jpg.be65e8ab3a0a081509072f2021522321.jpg

Since the costs for this story were not insignificant, I had a few more screws made and am now offering them to you.

300SL282.jpg.0293380e944913034b32ff1eebcfa47a.jpg

I still have 2 sets of 4 of these wing screws left. So if you don't want the hubcaps and want to upgrade your model, feel free to contact me via PM.

hello,

last steps before completion.

I noticed a small sticker on the rear bumper.

300SL301.jpg.4081d245ae69e32bf0bb6f68f3ab7a79.jpg

So I had a better picture and the measurements sent to me and made this sticker.

300SL302.jpg.cfe4a5622a6d9a553fe3b07316b73625.jpg

The enlargement looks pathetic again but the printout is only 7.5 mm wide.

300SL303.jpg.679f25b86bfc79c296a3311b0d50c541.jpg

300SL304.jpg.10cebd8c978a61ccad11fa044cb1d970.jpg This is what it looks like at the rear. And with the official license plate.

300SL305.jpg.02ac7b71cdea97c77957732bbb63adbd.jpg

I also noticed a sticker on the front, the one from the Swiss Veterans Club.

300SL306.jpg.28e5277c594bcdf35fc3f32cf90b73d9.jpg

So I printed this out in the right size and mounted it.

300SL307.jpg.d64334f8bbe55e207734126cf198e1f0.jpg

and here too with the official license plate and another picture of the original.

300SL308.jpg.7dc9feb66e383296532334d7cff9baea.jpg

300SL309.jpg.a982e0432b51afd824f0b34afbcdc424.jpg

I mounted both license plates on 0.5 mm sheet steel and glued neodymium magnets into the screw holes in the bumpers.

This means that they can either be removed or clicked on.
