Pack 1 - Stage 4. Starting the transaxle

The transaxle is the unit that bolts to the engine and combines both the gearbox, differential and rear axle.  However, most people will understand its main function if you call it the gearbox.  This is what we start assembling in this stage.

Fit the mounting bracket to the gearbox housing.

Take the cross piece and fit it to the flexible joint.  It's small and fiddly, so it's easier to just get the screws started at this stage.  A top of lubricant in the holes also helps.  Vaseline or oil work well.

Now add the transmission seal.  Once all screws are in loosely you can tighten them all.  Don't over tighten them though, as the joint has to move freely.

Fix this flexible joint to the inner flex disc with a screw.

Now add the outer flex disc.  Note that it's secured with just 2 screws.  The third screw is a mounded in dummy.

Next, add the cardan socket.  Again, 2 screws and the third is a moulded in dummy.

Finally, fit the transmission seal to the transaxle housing.  Don't over tighten this as it must turn freely.  It's odd that it's a square seal as it rotates.  It is true to prototype judging from photos I found on the web.

This completes stage 4

Does anyone know a good color match, either testor's or Tamiya, for the engine block and transmission case? It appears to be an olive drab or similar. I had to do quite a bit of dremel filing to get everything to fit properly, and need to do some touch up.

I don't think there's a direct match with Tamiya.  It's a metallic brown.  I'd be inclined to try mixing brown with titanium silver or titanium gold.

No idea about Testors paints I'm afraid.
